Spyware And Adware - What It Is And How To Avoid It

Author: Paul Wilcox

Any program that is created to cause harm, even if what is harmful is vague, is called "malware". Some types of malware include Trojans, viruses, pop-ups, spam, and spyware. However, what some people think of as junk, others think of as treasure.

Adware

There are two different types of adware: (!) the malicious kind, and (2) the kind of software that has advertising supporting it. This type of software could be considered useful if released at no cost but is used to generate profits for advertisers just like a commercial on television. You don't have to look at them but if you're looking for Internet content, you'll get ads. This kind of software can also be found in forms that are ad-free but this comes with a cost.

Malicious adware will keep track of how you browse the Internet and will deliver you advertising that is targeted. This can be thought of as spyware particularly if it's installed without your giving permission or knowing about it. So when does adware turn into spyware? This is a vague area. There are some software sellers who say that by telling you there is adware in the software you are giving legal consent for the installation of it. Not all users check out the fine print since it's full of legal terms and formatted in one big mess.

Spyware

There is an evil meaning behind spyware. This term can be applied to any software that does more than monitor how you surf the Internet. Spyware can also link your browser to the websites of advertisers.

Spyware is usually installed on your computer without your knowledge or consent. Many times it will be hidden in other programs. It can also come in the payload of a virus or a worm. Spyware is illegal in some countries. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in the US has convicted and indicted some guilty parties.

Some sellers of software require that you install spyware as part of the package download. BearShare and Kazaa, that use file sharing utilities, are well known for this. The spyware is stated in your user agreement but you don't have any option for not having it on your computer if you want to use the main program. This is legal and very annoying.

Spyware that is installed with programs will collect information about how you browse the Internet so that advertising can be targeted just for you. Advertising that is targeted has been created for certain user groups after their browsing and shopping habits have been analyzed. This can be narrowed down to age, gender, and sites that you visit often.

Some spyware sellers will tell you that they don't gather certain personal data and that there are some distinctions about whether or not privacy is being violated or that it's not legitimate.

Most computer users will find it intrusive and annoying. There are some advertisers who say spyware is one of the best ways for them to get the right advertising and services to the right customers. They feel that it's just another legal form of free speech. Computer users reply that this free speech shouldn't reach their computer or email inbox.

Most likely this argument won't be decided any time soon.
